1. Does the density of turban snails increase as you move toward the ocean?

2. We placed our half-meter square in random locations progressing towards the ocean with each successive placement. We took a total of 4 samples and counted the number of turban snails without lifting stones, in each 1/2 meter square. We covered about 7 meters from the first sample to the last.

Conclusion: The Serpentines assumed that the population of Tegula sp would increase in each tidepool as we progressed closer to the ocean. As the study continued westward, the technique used to assure randomness was that a rock was tossed over the shoulder and behind by one group member. Study #1 contained about 15% rock, study #2 contained 70% rock. Study #3 was conducted on a site that was 95% rock and only 5%water, ,very little habitat for the snail. The fourth study was conducted in a pool containing many other species. These studies were inconclusive, although there was a consensus, that perhaps pools with more rocks, and more surfaces with which to hold on to, may contain more snails.
